ÖGK x ITSV

Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK) is the largest social health insurance organisation in Austria: it offers protection to 7.6 million insured persons in Austria – regardless of age or income.
ITSV, our client, is IT-Services der Sozialversicherung GmbH (ITSV GmbH), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Austrian social insurance institutions. For almost 20 years, ITSV has been combining bundled social insurance expertise, efficiency and security to form the centrepiece of the IT activities of the Austrian social insurance system.

The Challenge

One design library for all

On behalf of ITSV, we set up a central design library for ÖGK that is simple and easy to understand for all teams. A library that is quick to grasp and optimises quality and collaboration. In future, adaptive design should work for all devices, from app/mobile to web. The design library should be self-explanatory and clearly display and provide all content. It should also be accessible for non-designers, therefore visually clean and tidy and ready for future optimisations (scalable).

The Approach

UI Audit

A UI audit aims to review the current status of design assets and consult all available resources such as corporate guidelines. Thanks to the ÖGK Corporate Design Manual, we were able to get an idea of the current state of design and identify potential coherence errors. We also categorised and grouped elements logically to ensure better clarity and structure.

Figma Library

Creation of a Figma Library

In this first phase, the Figma design tool will be used to create the Design Library, which will serve as a single source of truth for all future design projects at the ÖGK. This file will then be linked to all design projects and thus always provide the latest updates. This will ensure that the overall image of ÖGK’s digital products remains consistent.

Building Blocks

Foundations

In a design system, foundations refer to the basic building blocks that define the visual and functional principles on which the entire system is based. These foundational elements serve as core components that ensure consistency, coherence and efficiency throughout the design process. They typically include the logo, typography, colours, spacing and icons, and can be found in the corporate guidelines.

Design Building Blocks

Components

These building blocks are later used by designers as finished UI components. When creating a component, particular attention is paid to the following criteria: Name: (it should be easy to find for all team members), Anatomy (what the component consists of, especially important for developers who have to build this component), Variants (a component can have several variants such as size, with or without icon, colours, etc.). Over 50 components have been created for the ÖGK which have helped to build consistent screens and improve the user experience.

Designprozess

Documentation

Component documentation is a key part of the design process, especially when it comes to managing design systems and ensuring that the whole team is on the same page. For this project, we documented the component centrally and within the Figma file to clearly show the usage, functionality and variations of the components.

The little prince went to see the roses again: "You are not at all like my rose, you are nothing yet", he said to them. No one has tamed you and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox was. It was only a fox like a hundred thousand others. But I have made him my friend, and he is now unique in the world."

Learnings

What happens next?

Maintaining a design system requires regular reviews, feedback from users and team members, up-to-date documentation, version control for changes, consistency in design, training for the team and the promotion of continuous development. These measures allow the design system to remain relevant, consistent and user-friendly, which always results in high-quality products.
