BARMER ePA

BARMER is required by law (§ 20k and § 343 SGB V) to enhance the digital health literacy of its members and inform them about the nationwide rollout of the electronic patient record (ePA), as well as their right to opt out of it.
In order to meet these obligations, BARMER partnered with ENNOstudio to create an engaging, accessible information campaign. The initiative aims to help members understand the use cases and benefits of the ePA, thus empowering them to make more informed decisions.

The Challenge

Transforming Legal Mandates into Engaging and Impactful Experiences

We embraced the challenge of transforming complex legal requirements into engaging experiences by helping BARMER take a lead in communicating the rollout of the electronic patient record (ePA), not just to their members, but to the broader public too. With a focus on accessibility, gamification and simplicity, we launched the first topic on a new knowledge platform designed to allow BARMER members to easily understand the ePA, its benefits and their rights with regard to it. Furthermore, we sought to build trust and resonate emotionally with our audience by presenting authentic, real-life examples and dispelling myths connected to the topic concerned. With these actions, we set a new benchmark in healthcare communication by positioning BARMER as a pioneer in turning mandatory information into valuable, impactful content for all.

The Approach

Simplifying Complexity Through User-Centric Design

Our approach started with understanding BARMER’s diverse audience; taking into consideration different digital skills, accessibility needs and language preferences. Through user research we ensured the design and content resonated with all groups, including more mature adults. The ePA page featured a clear, step-by-step layout and used simple language, free of technical jargon, to explain the ePA. We also integrated animations and animation videos in order to simplify complex topics. In addition, we developed a concept for interactive elements such as quizzes, videos and gamified learning to make the ePA experience engaging, rewarding and effective in terms of reinforcing key information.

The Creative Process

From Concept to Creation

Our creative process began with establishing a clear information architecture for guiding the wireframing of pages. This involved mapping user flows and organizing information intuitively. At the same time, we developed the communication concept and text, while also focusing on UI design, to ensure visual alignment with the in-house design system.

A key part of our process was creating a storyboard for an animation video, which was designed to introduce users to the ePA in a clear and engaging manner. The resulting video was also fully conceptualized and produced by ENNOstudio. Additionally, we designed a quiz module to provide a playful, interactive learning experience that boosts user engagement with the ePA system.

UI Design

Integrating BARMER’s Brand with the 'Puls' Design System for Optimal Usability

The creation of UI designs for BARMER – incorporated into the “Puls” design system from IBMX and BARMER – followed a structured approach to ensure consistency, usability and brand identity compatability. The process is based on the “Puls” guidelines, which provide detailed specifications for colors, typography, icons and other design elements. This ensures that the UI designs consistently reflect BARMER’s visual identity. Additionally, the design focuses on delivering high usability, making the interface intuitive and user-friendly, but still aligned to the design system. This method guarantees a seamless integration of the BARMER brand and a user experience that is functional and accessible.

Gamification

Video Creation and Engaging Quizzes for Intuitive Understanding

For the BARMER ePA project our content creation focused on making complex information more accessible and engaging. A key component was an explanatory video, for which ENNOstudio developed the concept, storyboard, script, visual elements and animation. The video communicated the benefits and functionality of the ePA effectively and became a central educational tool in the campaign.

Additionally, we designed a quiz module to incorporate gamification at the end of each chapter. This module was crafted to make learning about the ePA an informative and enjoyable experience, encouraging deeper engagement with the content and rewarding user interest.

The little prince went to see the roses again: "You are not at all like my rose, you are nothing yet", he said to them. No one has tamed you and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox was. It was only a fox like a hundred thousand others. But I have made him my friend, and he is now unique in the world."

Learnings

Achieving Productive Collaboration and Creativity on a Tight Timeline

The BARMER ePA project underscored the crucial role of structured collaboration and adaptability in complex, multi-stakeholder scenarios. We discovered that clear communication and a well-defined process are essential for delivering high-quality results on schedule, particularly when coordinating with various partners. The project also demonstrated the effectiveness of an approach, where each phase builds on the previous one, which ensures that both creative and technical elements come together to provide a seamless and pleasant user experience.
